Rules Specific to 7-card Stud poker:
The poker table in 7-card stud has seven players and the dealer. Like
Hold'em, the dealer does not receive cards. But unlike Hold'em there is no
button. The order of betting in 7-card stud is determined by the players' board
cards so there is no need for button. To commence a hand of 7-card stud the
dealer collects an ante from each player. The ante is the nominal amount
compared to the betting level of the game. Just like the blinds in Hold'em, the
ante forces the players to play.
The dealer deals three cards, one at a time, to each player. The first
two cards are faced down (holecards) and the third card face up (doorcard). Once
all players have their first three cards, the first betting round begins. The
player with the lowest doorcard is force to make a bring-in bet. In other words,
the lowest card makes a forced bet. In the event of a tie, the tie is broken by
suit (the only time in poker when suits are used). The order of suits from
lowest to highest is clubs, diamonds, hearts, and spades. The action then moves
clockwise from the bring-in bettor. Each player in turn has the option to fold,
call, or raise. Once the first betting round is complete, the dealer deals each
player another card face up and the second round begins. Now this round is
opened by the player with the highest card. If there is a tie, the first tied
player clockwise from the dealer will act first. On 4th street there is no
bring-in bet.
The first player to act has the option to check or bet. After this
betting round, the poker dealer gives each remaining player another face up card
- 5th street. Now each player has two hole cards and three up cards. Once again,
the high card acts first and betting follows clockwise. After the betting round
is complete, 6th street is dealt. Then a seventh final card is dealt and the
last betting begins. The betting rounds continues the same as in 5th street.
After the final betting round there is the showdown. The players table their
poker hands starting with the last player to be called and the dealer awards the
pot to the poker player holding the best five cards.
